GROF MOTO 21 - Kočevje and Cerknica
This route takes you across the hills of Zasavje, the rolling vineyards of Dolenjska, and the mysterious forests of Kočevje, all the way to the plateaus of Inner Carniola before returning to the Savinja Valley. The tour offers an ideal mix of flowing roads, technically demanding curves, and plenty of opportunities to stop in beautiful towns and natural attractions.
The tour begins at Hotel Grof, a popular stop for motorcyclists, from where we head toward Hrastnik and then on to Radeče, where you already feel the shift to quieter, more winding roads along the Sava River. Continuing toward Sevnica, the landscape opens up, offering lovely views of the vineyard-covered hills — a perfect spot for a short break and refreshment.
From the Posavje region, the road takes us to Novo mesto, the heart of Dolenjska, where you can visit the charming old town on the banks of the Krka River. A scenic and varied section follows toward Črnomelj, passing through the peaceful Bela krajina region, known for its unique landscape and friendly locals. The road here winds gently through the hills, providing a fun yet relaxed riding experience.
From Črnomelj, we ride toward Kočevje, through forested and somewhat remote areas with little traffic and a true sense of wilderness. The road then ascends to Ribnica, known for its woodenware tradition, before continuing across the Inner Carniola plateau toward Cerknica, home of the famous intermittent Lake Cerknica – one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
The route then turns back toward central Slovenia, passing through Domžale and continuing to Trojane, where a stop for the legendary Trojane doughnuts is a must. After this refreshing break, we follow winding roads through the Zasavje hills back to our starting point – Hotel Grof.
Recommended stops:
- Old town of Novo mesto (sightseeing and coffee by the Krka River)
- Kočevje Lake or the Mining Park
- Lake Cerknica – ideal for a short walk
- Trojane – for the famous doughnuts
Tips:
- Some sections have low traffic but less-than-perfect road surfaces – caution is advised.
- Check road conditions near Kočevje and Črnomelj beforehand, as forestry work or closures are sometimes in effect.
- In summer, an early start is recommended due to the length of the route and the many scenic stop options.

A map of motorcycling routes is available at the reception of Hotel Grof, where you can also download selected GPX to your navigation device.
