Austrian Carinthia – Short Tour

If you enjoy relaxed panoramic rides, winding mountain roads, and wine-growing landscapes, this circular motorcycle tour is an excellent choice. It takes you from the Savinja Valley across scenic Carinthia, through picturesque places on the Austrian side of the border, across the hilly wine-tourism region of southern Styria, and back via Maribor and Celje to the starting point. The road offers smooth riding, several beautiful viewpoints, and plenty of opportunities for culinary or wine stops.

This tour is suitable for all motorcyclists, combining less busy regional roads, some mountain sections, and city crossings. A great choice for a relaxed-paced ride and enjoying the surroundings. It starts at Hotel Grof, from where you follow regional roads towards Šoštanj, past the Topolšica Spa and through a narrow, winding valley towards Črna na Koroškem. This section offers beautiful forested areas, curves, and views of the remote landscape below Mount Peca. The route continues through Mežica, known for its mining history and interesting underground museum. You cross the Austrian border at Bleiburg, and the road begins to climb and descend through the green hills of southern Carinthia. The ride through Lavamund and Rothwein offers calm, flowing curves – ideal for a relaxed drive.

Next comes one of the most scenic parts of the day – riding through the South Styrian Wine Road region between Leutschach an der Weinstraße and Ehrenhausen. Here, the hilly landscape winds through vineyards, with plenty of opportunities for wine tasting stops or a lunch with a view. After crossing the border back into Slovenia, you descend past Bresternica toward Maribor, where you can enjoy a coffee by the Drava River or take a short walk through the old town. The route continues south through Slovenska Bistrica, Slovenske Konjice, and Vojnik, with the final winding section via Celje and Žalec, completing the circle at Hotel Grof.

Highlights

Tour tips:
  • Roads through Austrian Carinthia are excellent but can be narrow – caution in curves and villages is advised.
  • In the South Styrian wine region, weekend traffic can be heavier due to tourism – an earlier start is recommended.

A map of motorcycling routes is available at the reception of Hotel Grof, where you can also download selected GPX to your navigation device.
