GROF MOTO 33 - Soriška planina (shorter tour)
Soriška Planina – Shorter Tour
WARNING: Part of the route runs on the motorway, and a valid vignette is required. If you prefer to avoid the motorway, choose the GROF MOTO 32 or GROF MOTO 31 tour.
This pleasant circular motorcycle tour combines historic towns, scenic mountain passes, panoramic roads and a relaxed ride through central Slovenia. The tour starts at Hotel Grof, from where you first head towards Kamnik, a charming town below the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, known for its rich history and picturesque old town. The route continues past Kranj to Škofja Loka, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Slovenia, with narrow streets, bridges and a castle creating a unique historical atmosphere.
From there, the road leads through Železniki and climbs along a winding mountain road to Soriška Planina (1,300 m), a long-time favorite among Slovenian motorcyclists. This stretch impresses with its good surface, enjoyable curves and beautiful views of the Julian Alps and Mount Triglav. After descending, you continue on the panoramic road towards Bled, famous for its stunning lake with the island and clifftop castle – one of Slovenia’s most iconic views.
From Bled, the route takes you via the Lesce motorway past nearby Radovljica, a charming Gorenjska town with a rich culinary tradition and a beautifully preserved old center. Continue on the motorway past Kranj, then switch to a regional road towards Domžale to avoid traffic around Ljubljana. From Domžale, rejoin the motorway back to Hotel Grof, where the tour ends. Alternatively, from Kranj you can stay on the motorway through Ljubljana (A2 and then A1), but watch out for possible congestion during morning and afternoon rush hours.
Make a stop:
- Kamnik – historic town with a charming old center, Franciscan monastery and Alpine views.
- Škofja Loka – medieval town center, Loški Castle and stone bridge over the Sora River.
- Soriška Planina – scenic mountain pass with winding roads and beautiful views.
- Bled – Lake Bled, island, castle, and a great stop for coffee or the famous cream cake.
- Radovljica – well-preserved old town, gingerbread museum, chocolate shops and inns.
Tour Tips:
- Part of the route runs on the motorway, so a valid vignette is required.
- The road over Soriška Planina is narrow and winding; moderate speed and extra caution are recommended, especially in shady bends where there may be gravel or moisture.
- Bled is very popular during the tourist season, so an early arrival or off-peak visit is recommended.
- For the final stretch from Kranj to Domžale you can either take the regional road or the motorway through Ljubljana, but be aware of possible traffic jams during rush hours.
